LILY FLOWER

Lily plants grow up 2-6 feet tall and bear large gorgeous flowers. Each stem can carry from one to eight blossoms. The Lily flower is an elegant and delicate flower with a strong, sweet scent. The Lily flower can be trumpet-shaped, bowl-shaped, bell-shaped, turk’s-cap and almost flat. The Lily blossom faces either upward or outward. Flowers may be borne upright, horizontal or swept-back. They may grow singly or in branched clusters.
Lily flowers grow to a 6-inch diameter. They come in the widest range of colors and sizes. This diversity contributes enormously to the magic of the genus Lilium. Lilies flowers may be white, yellow, pink, red, orange and purple, many with speckles, freckles and spots. The Lily blossom has three sepals and three petals. The inner three are petals and the outer three are sepals. Due to their similarity in size and shape, they are termed tepals. These six tepals comprise the corolla of the Lily blossom.

Within the Lily flower are six stamens, the male reproductive parts of the flower. Eash stamen has a stalk (filament), and on top of the stalk, an anther, the pollen-bearing organ. Lily pollen may be yellow, orange or brown depending on varieties. The Lily blossom has a pistil, the female reproductive organ. The pistil, centrally located, consists of a swollen base, the ovary, where the seeds form, and a stalk, or style, arising from the ovary, with the stigma on the top, the part of the pistil which receives the pollen. Lily plants blooms at various times depending on the species. It can be any where from late-spring through fall. Lily flowers live one to two weeks.
